Economic Manipulation of Cybercrime Markets

Up to this point in time, the primary law enforcement strategy used to fight cybercrime has been the “hammer”. Alongside arrests, has been the takedown of cybercriminal infrastructure, such as marketplaces or botnets. This project moves beyond the law enforcement hammer, and examines the underlying economics of cybercrime and the levers which might be pulled to reduce the efficiency of cybercriminal markets. Using a series of experiments, it simulates whether a cybercriminal market could be turned into a failed “market for lemons”. This work provides an exciting avenue for developing policy solutions for how cybercrime might be disrupted in the “wild”.
