About

Dr Jonathan Lusthaus is Director of The Human Cybercriminal Project and Associate Professor in Global Sociology at the University of Oxford (a joint appointment between the Department of Sociology and the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies). He is also a Governing Body Fellow of St Antony’s College. He is the author of Industry of Anonymity: Inside the Business of Cybercrime published by Harvard University Press.

Jonathan’s research focuses on the “human” side of profit-driven cybercrime: who cybercriminals are and how they are organised. He is a regular speaker at major cybersecurity conferences, including Black HatDef Con, Enigma and the International Conference on Cyber Security. Jonathan has appeared on the a16z Podcast and FT’s Tech Tonic, and has written articles for The New York Times, The New Statesman and TLS.

Jonathan’s research has taken him all over the world. For Industry of Anonymity, he carried out fieldwork over a 7-year period in 20 countries, including visits to cybercrime hotspots such as Russia, Ukraine, Romania, China, Nigeria and Brazil. During this global journey, he conducted almost 250 interviews with law enforcement agents, security professionals, and former cybercriminals.

Jonathan holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of Oxford, where he was a Clarendon Scholar.
